Interior Design “Mistakes” to Avoid (4/10): Failure to Create a Focal Point
“A focal point is the first thing you see when you enter a room.  Sometimes it is an architectural feature such as a fireplace or windows.  If the space you’re working with doesn’t have a “natural” focal point, create one!  Use an bold work of art, dramatic piece of furniture or a large mirror.” – Bobbi Jo Engelby, Principal Designer and Owner

Incorrect:
There is no true focal point in this living room — your eye doesn’t know where to rest.

Correct:

Both of these images display good examples of creating a focal point.  The tall, dark chest with a framed picture on top draws the eye above the sitting area and brings cohesiveness to the room while the use of the mirror as a focal point creates balance in the space.
